Fractured Europe: list of characters & places
As well as a few notes about some significant events.
From The Fractured Europe Sequence & Cold Water by Dave Hutchinson
This list may be particularly helpful for people who listen to the audiobooks—for example, when characters are named Forsyth and Forsythe; Stefan and Stepan; Erik and Eric—as well as for people like me who aren't deeply familiar with the geography of Europe. It also can be helpful when a character is briefly introduced, then shows up hundreds of pages later or in a following book. That said, even after two listens and taking these notes, I'm still puzzled about some bits of the story. And that's okay.

Almost every inch of his body was terribly burned, and the machines and devices and bottles of fluid and gas which kept him alive lined the walls, clear plastic tubes running everywhere across the floor. A bulky mask was strapped to his face, feeding some kind of oxygenated fluid into his ruined lungs." What's left of Fabio. The Kapitan is Fabio's sister's boy, "Little Fabio"

- The Black Sheet, still later, even more imaginary villages were added by Charles, General Whitton-Whyte's grandson, and the enclosing 'county' of Ernshire; the map was banned by Parliament
- The Natal Sheet, the final revision of Sheet 2000 printed on the day Edwin, General Whitton-Whyte's great grandson was born; only one copy survives; the county of Ernshire now includes "rail links to the four points of the compass, an extensive road network, a barracks in Anselmdale, farms, churches, post offices, all the amenities of a real county, even a manor house at Eveshalt"; "In September 1890 a special Act of Parliament was passed forbidding any member of the Whitton-Whyte family from ever publishing another map"
- Edwin Winton-Whyte's journal: My father believed, he wrote, as did my grandfather and great-grandfather, that he had discovered a county where none exists, a landscape overlooked by the very people who occupy it. My grandfather writes of maps having a power over the land, and theorises that if an imaginary landscape is mapped in great enough detail, it will eventually supplant the actual physical landscape, as a wet cloth wipes chalk from a blackboard. My great-grandfather, on the other hand, wrote of all possible landscapes underlying each other like the pages of a book, requiring only the production of a map of each landscape to make it real.

"The Community was a topological freak, a nation existing in the same place as Europe but only accessible through certain points on the map."
- The Baedeker, Lev's sarcastic name for the "guidebook" (Verlag Karl Baedeker is a German publisher and pioneer in the business of worldwide travel guides); "This was what Fabio had stolen from the Line's consulate in Poznań. Three proofs of the existence of a parallel universe. And a map showing how to get into it."
